What to look for in an Atlanta injury lawyer

Every firm calls itself the best. These are the questions that actually tell you whether a lawyer is the right fit for your case.

  1. 1

You talk to a lawyer, not just a call center

Ask who will handle your case and how to reach them. You should know your attorney's name and get straight answers when you call.

  2. 2

Real experience with cases like yours

A truck crash, a fall on a wet floor and a fender-bender are very different claims. Ask about similar cases the firm has handled and how they turned out.

  3. 3

    Willing to go to court

Insurers track which firms settle cheaply and which ones prepare every case for trial. That reputation affects the offers you receive.

  4. 4

    Clear, written fees

Contingency fees should be explained in writing before you sign, including how case costs are handled. No surprises at the end.

  5. 5

    Local knowledge

Knowing Fulton, DeKalb and Cobb courts, local police records units and Atlanta's problem roads helps build a stronger case faster.

Common questions about hiring an injury lawyer

How do I choose the right injury lawyer in Atlanta?

Look past billboards. Ask who will actually handle your file day to day, how often you will hear from them, whether they have taken cases like yours to trial, and how fees and case costs are split at the end. A good lawyer answers all of that plainly in the first conversation.

How much does a personal injury lawyer cost?

We work on a contingency fee. You pay nothing up front, and our fee comes out of the money we recover. If there is no recovery, you owe no attorney fee. The exact percentage and how case expenses are handled are written into the agreement before we start.

What is my injury case worth?

It depends on your medical treatment, time missed from work, long-term effects, how clearly the other side is at fault, and the insurance coverage available. Nobody can give an honest number in the first call, but we can tell you which factors matter most in your case.

How long do I have to file an injury claim in Georgia?

Georgia generally gives you two years from the date of injury to file a personal injury lawsuit. Claims against a city, county or the state can require written notice within six or twelve months, so it is wise to speak with a lawyer early.

What if I was partly at fault?

Georgia uses modified comparative negligence. You can still recover if you were less than 50% at fault, but your compensation is reduced by your share of the blame. Insurers often push that percentage up, which is one reason to have someone in your corner.

Should I talk to the other driver's insurance company?

You do not have to give a recorded statement to the other side's insurer, and it is usually best not to until you have spoken with a lawyer. Their adjuster's job is to limit what the company pays.
